It became a gift to the city of Pittsburgh with the noble purpose of informing and educating its residents about exotic plant species. Inside the greenhouse there are a large number of rooms that are capable of reproducing a wide variety of habitats – from humid tropical forests to arid deserts. The building has a Victorian architecture, so typical of European greenhouses of the 19th century.
